The Mer Queen by Cecily Anne Winters is such a fantastic sequel that expands the world of The Overlay Worlds—raising the stakes, deepening the magic, and shifting the spotlight in a way that surprised me.

If you’re going in expecting more of The Mer King…pause. Reset your expectations. This is Mira’s story.

What It’s About

With the merfolk restored and the realm still reeling from past events, a new threat emerges—and this time, the burden of survival falls on Princess Mira.

As her hidden heritage awakens and a powerful sea witch rises against them, Mira must face:

  • the trials of divinity
  • the weight of leadership
  • and a magic that may not be done demanding its price

Meanwhile, the Mer King is missing…and the realm teeters on the edge of chaos.

Characters & Growth

Mira is at the heart of this story and she carries it beautifully.

Her journey gives:

  • weak-to-strong FMC
  • heroine’s journey
  • overwhelming responsibility and emotional growth

Watching her step into her power while everything around her threatens to collapse was so satisfying.

And Callan?

Let’s just say…he makes a lot more sense now. We learn more about why he is the way he is, and his character feels much more layered and understandable.

Romance & Dynamics

This isn’t instant gratification—it’s:

  • slow burn
  • tension-filled
  • emotionally driven

With dynamics like:

  • he needs her, she can’t stand him
  • second chance undertones
  • a touch of spice 🌶️

There’s complexity in every interaction, and nothing feels easy or straightforward.

World-Building & Magic

The world feels bigger, darker, and more dangerous this time around.

Magic is:

  • unstable
  • demanding
  • and very much alive

And the constant question lingers:

What if the price hasn’t been fully paid yet?

Tropes & Themes

Tropes to expect:

  • Mermaids & mermen
  • Morally gray king
  • Chosen one
  • Slow burn romance
  • Forced emotional proximity
  • Weak-to-strong FMC

Themes explored:

  • Power and responsibility
  • Legacy and identity
  • The cost of magic
  • Trust, betrayal, and survival

Vibes

Emotional, magical, and intense—like being pulled under by a powerful current you’re not sure you’ll survive.

Final Thoughts

The Mer Queen is a bold and emotional continuation that shifts focus in a way that might surprise you—but absolutely pays off if you let the story unfold on its own terms.

It’s bigger. Riskier. More emotionally driven.

And it proves that in this world…

magic always comes with a cost.

I strongly suspect there's going to be a third book in this series, and I look forward to reading it. Don't miss out on this series!

Our final verdict:
5.00

Writing reviews is only half my story; the other half is spent crafting gritty, no-romance vampire thrillers. If you prefer your vampires dangerous and your characters morally gray, you might want to hide out in the Ghost in the Attic with me.
