What to Expect
This is a fast-paced dark fantasy set in a richly imagined underwater world where magic is essential—and deeply flawed. But so goo!
Zoe is thrust into this strange, hostile realm where nothing makes sense, and she’s expected to be grateful to a king who essentially tears her from her life “for the greater good.”
Spoiler: she is not impressed. And honestly? Same. I wanted to kill him at first.
Characters & Dynamics
Zoe is a strong, compelling FMC whose growth really shines throughout the story. Watching her adapt, question, and ultimately step into her power was one of the highlights.
King Callan… is a journey.
He starts off as frustrating (to put it mildly), very much embodying the morally gray, secretive ruler archetype. But as layers are peeled back, he becomes more complex—and yes, he did grow on me, eventually.
And then there are the side characters 👀
Malik, in particular, stood out and completely stole my attention. I may have started hoping for a why-choose situation at some point…If you've been following my reviews for some time, you know I love to indulge from time to time.
World-Building: Dark Magic Beneath the Surface
The underwater world is one of the book’s strongest elements.
It feels:
- immersive
- magical
- but also deeply corrupted
This isn’t a romanticized ocean kingdom—this is a society shaped by power, decay, and long-standing consequences of magic misuse.
Nothing is simple, and nothing is free.
Themes & Tropes
Tropes to expect:
- Reverse Little Mermaid (human in an underwater world)
- Forced proximity
- Chosen one
- Morally gray hero
Core themes:
- Dark magic with consequences
- Trust vs. deception
- Duty vs. personal agency
- Political intrigue
Zoe is right in the middle of it all—whether she wants to be or not.
Vibes
Dark, immersive, and angsty fantasy with high stakes, morally complex characters, and a constant sense that something isn’t quite right beneath the surface.
Final Thoughts
The Mer King is perfect if you’re craving a darker fantasy with emotional depth, tension, and a heroine who has to fight for her place in a world that never asked for her consent.
It’s gripping, layered, and full of intrigue—and if you enjoy morally gray characters and twisted fairytale retellings, this one is definitely worth diving into.
When I’m not reviewing, I’m usually causing trouble for my own characters. If you have a soft spot for witches, Romanian folklore, and supernatural sleuthing, my Paranormal Misadventures series was written just for you.
