Book six in the Crossroads Queen series continues to build the emotional and supernatural layers that have made this series so addictive. Lorelei still can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble—or out of other people’s business, even when she swears she wants solitude. And yet, despite her constant protests, her soft heart continues to win out. In Play Dead, that contradiction is more pronounced than ever… especially when the person asking for her help is the last one you’d expect.

The Unexpected Ask

Addison—the very same woman who tried to sell Lorelei out to the Corporation—is back, and this time she needs help. To say I had mixed feelings is an understatement. Part of me wanted Lorelei to slam the door in her face, but the other part appreciated the layers this added to both their character arcs.

The Past Comes Knocking

One of the biggest emotional punches in this book is the long-awaited dive into Lorelei’s past. It’s tragic, it’s raw, and it finally gives us the missing piece of who she is and why she keeps people at arm’s length. The author handled it beautifully—vulnerable without being overwrought. There’s a line from Otto that stuck with me: “You make more sense now.” That pretty much sums it up. Seeing Lorelei through the lens of her history adds so much depth and made me connect with her more than ever.

The Lore Expands (And So Does the Trouble)

The introduction of the Wild Hunt is a brilliant new addition to this already rich world. It raises the stakes and reinforces that Fairhaven and its chaotic crossroads are becoming a hotspot for all things otherworldly. Add to that a new underground speakeasy (which I need more of in the next book), new enemies, new allies, and a subtle shift in tone—this installment really feels like the turning point of the series.

What’s Still Working

Lorelei’s sarcasm is still elite.

The found family vibes are stronger than ever.

The plot weaves together multiple threads without becoming convoluted.

Emotional beats hit hard and resonate.

What Didn't Land

Without spoilers, I’ll say the ending bummed me out a little. It made sense narratively, but it also felt like a missed opportunity. Still, I trust the author knows what she’s building toward, and this felt like a clear setup for what’s coming.

Final Thoughts

Play Dead delivers another fantastic installment in the Crossroads Queen series. It deepens the lore, raises the emotional stakes, and sets the stage for what’s clearly going to be an even bigger storm. Lorelei is evolving—reluctantly but undeniably—and it’s such a rewarding journey to witness.

This series keeps surprising me in the best way, and if Play Dead is any indication, it gets better with each book. Perfect for fans of urban fantasy, contemporary fantasy, and strong, adult heroines.
