With Dead Last, the third book in Annabel Chase’s Crossroads Queen series, Lorelei once again proves that she’s the most reluctant heroine with the biggest heart. No matter how determined she is to stay tucked away in her crumbling castle, the world keeps knocking—and Lorelei, for all her sass and sarcasm, just can’t seem to ignore a cry for help.
If I had to sum up this entire series in one line, it would be this quote from the book:
“You hide from the world unless, of course, a stranger needs you.”

The Story
Lorelei’s plan to keep a low profile continues to unravel. A new mystery has her more involved with the people of Fairhaven than ever before, and that includes charming new cop Leo (who is, frankly, adorable). There’s also mounting tension in her relationship with Kane, as the secrets Lorelei has kept—and the ones others are keeping from her—begin to surface.
And then everything shifts.
In this book, the stakes are raised dramatically. We finnaly find the truth about Lorelei's true nature (no spoilers, but wow), and now that she’s on the Corporation’s radar, the danger is very real. Kane’s sudden distance is unsettling, and while part of me wanted to shake him, another part suspects there’s more to his disappearance than hurt feelings or fear. I’m reserving judgment… for now.
Mystery, Magic & Mayhem
This installment is jam-packed with developments. The mystery is layered and engaging, and even as some answers are finally revealed, you’re left with even more questions. The world of Fairhaven continues to expand, and so do the stakes for Lorelei. It's fast-paced, emotionally charged, and utterly immersive.
One of the highlights of this series continues to be the way Annabel Chase builds a world where the mundane and the magical constantly collide. The supernatural cast—from ghosts and demons to new and mysterious beings—adds richness and excitement to every twist and turn.
Final Thoughts
Dead Last is another fantastic installment in what’s become an addictive series. It’s got heart, humor, a solid dose of mystery, and a heroine you can’t help but root for—even as she pushes people away. The world-building in this one is especially impressive, and there are jaw-dropping reveals that change the game entirely.
Even when the story frustrates you (and trust me, Kane’s behavior might), there’s something about Lorelei, Fairhaven, and the ever-expanding mysteries that keeps you coming back. If you're a fan of paranormal mysteries with depth, sass, and soul, you’ll want to keep turning the pages—right up to that semi-cliffhanger ending.
Bring on the next book.
