At the beginning of the year, I read The Trinket That Tied Us by C.L. Mari as an ARC—and I loved it.

But life got busy. Between personal projects (including releasing Nightwinger’s Lethal Lullaby), I only managed a short Goodreads review at the time. Now that I’ve also read book two, I wanted to come back and give this story the proper spotlight it deserves—because this is where the series of Whisperlight Valley begins.

And trust me, it’s worth starting here.

A Bite-Sized Story with Big Heart

First things first: this is a novelette.

It’s short, quick to read, and perfect for those moments when you don’t have the energy for dense world-building or complicated plots—but still want something magical and satisfying.

Despite its length, it manages to do quite a lot:

  • Introduce the world of Whisperlight Valley
  • Establish its supernatural rules
  • Set the tone for the series

And, of course, deliver a heartfelt romance

Meet Mina & Callum

At the center of the story are Mina and Callum.

Mina has had feelings for Callum for a long time, which brings in that delicious pining energy right from the start. There’s a softness to her character that makes her easy to connect with, especially as she deals with her emotions and uncertainties.

Callum, on the other hand, is keeping secrets.

A big one.

The kind that shapes the entire story.

His hidden identity creates the core tension of the narrative, and watching that truth slowly come to light is what keeps you hooked.

Cozy Magic with Just Enough Mystery

Whisperlight Valley is exactly the kind of setting you want in a cozy paranormal romance: small, charming, and just a little bit magical.

This first book lays the groundwork for the series, giving readers a glimpse into how the supernatural exists within this world without overwhelming them with too much information.

And then there’s one detail I absolutely loved:

✨ a sentient store

It’s such a small touch, but it adds personality and whimsy to the setting in a way that makes the town feel alive.

Vibe Check

Cozy small-town magic, soft romance, and hidden secrets—with just enough tension to keep things interesting without ever losing its warmth.

Tropes You’ll Love

If you’re a trope-driven reader, this one delivers:

  • Secret identity
  • Hidden feelings / pining
  • Small-town magic
  • Overcoming fears
  • Touch her and die energy (yes, there’s a moment 👀)
  • Truth revealed

It leans into these tropes in a comforting, familiar way—perfect for when you want something that feels both predictable and satisfying.

Short, Sweet, and Satisfying

Because of its length, the story moves quickly. There’s no time for unnecessary detours, which works well for this kind of cozy romance.

The emotional beats land, the tension builds just enough, and the resolution feels earned—without dragging things out.

And now that I’ve read book two, I can confidently say that this first installment does exactly what it needs to do.

It sets the foundation.

Final Thoughts

The Trinket That Tied Us is a charming introduction to Whisperlight Valley—a story that proves you don’t need hundreds of pages to create emotional connection and a magical atmosphere.

If you enjoy:

  • Cozy paranormal romance
  • Small-town settings
  • Light, feel-good stories with a touch of mystery

…then this is the perfect place to start.

And if you plan on continuing the series (which I recommend), reading this first will make everything that follows feel richer and more meaningful.

Our final verdict:
5.00

When I’m not reviewing, I’m usually causing trouble for my own characters. If you have a soft spot for witches, Romanian folklore, and supernatural sleuthing, my Paranormal Misadventures series was written just for you.
