What’s Midnight Sun and why’s everyone talking about it?
Considering 2020 started off like a dystopian novel, I’m grateful for this 2008 throwback. Whether you read it or not, you must have heard of the Twilight Saga by now since it was a global phenomenon.
Midnight Sun is a companion novel to the Twilight Saga written from Edward Cullen’s perspective. The most exciting part was that Midnight Sun was going to explain some things (in Edward’s voice) that were left out in Twilight. But something awful happened!
The first 12 chapters of her manuscript got leaked to the public and Meyer was so disappointed and upset that she stopped working on this novel altogether.
If I remember correctly, she said she could bring her heart to work on it anymore and that if she would ever finish it, it would be released only when everyone forgot all about it.
Well, it looks like Stephanie Meyer did keep her promise even if it took her over a decade to do so.
Will Midnight Sun ever be released?
As time went by, Twilight fans almost lost hope that Midnight Sun would ever see the light of day. Twihards (yeah, that’s a word defined by the Macmillan Dictionary as a fan of the ‘Twilight’ series of books and films. A blend of the words ‘Twilight’ and ‘die-hard’)
sought comfort in fanfiction, or twilight memes and fun quizzes such as what twilight character am I?
But now fans are excited again to hear that Midnight Sun will finally be released this summer.
Midnight Sun release date
Fans were intrigued by the countdown posted on Stephanie Meyer’s website announcing something big was going on. As the countdown reached zero the big news was released. Midnight Soo is set to be released on August the 4th 2020.
Fans were ecstatic, social media was buzzing with the news, and people started to read again their favorite novels in preparation for Midnight Sun.
Some posted pictures with their tattered books (those are the real twihards who read the books over and over again) claiming they now need new copies. Actually, anything can be used as an excuse to buy a new copy, duh!
Here’s the back cover description from Amazon: When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella’s side of the story. At last, readers can experience Edward’s version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun.
This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger?
What is Midnight Sun Twilight about?
I got introduced to this movie (yes, I saw the movie first) by my sister in law who was back then a teenager and very much into the genre. It was fascinating how Twilight changed vampires from dark and brooding to sparkly and… still brooding. Regardless, I loved the movie and was happy to find out the movie was based on a series of books and more would follow. I binge-read the Twilight books!
We all got excited (well, I did anyway) when we found out that Stephanie Meyer was rewriting Twilight from Edward’s perspective and the book would be called Midnight Sun. Since we got to experience Twilight through Bella’s eye we were thrilled at the chance to dive into Edward’s mind for a change. But then there was the whole debacle with the leaked chapters and slowly I forgot.
What’s with the pomegranate cover?
The cover of Midnight Sun was released and it’s a callback to the original back covers, featuring an open pomegranate. Many are curious about the meaning of this fruit.
Although we won’t find out until August 4th, fans suspect Midnight Sun will draw from the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone.
For those unfamiliar with Greek mythology, Hades was the god of the dead who ruled Underworld and he fell in love with the goddess of spring, Persephone. Could Edward’s and Bella’s story be based on this myth?
The pomegranate on the Midnight Sun’s cover could be a reference to the seven pomegranate seeds that Persephone eats while captive in the Underworld tying her existence to Hades.
Will there be a Midnight Sun Movie?
Once the release of this companion novel was announced, the first question that came to every Twilight fan’s mind was “will there be a movie made after Midnight Sun?”
The second question was “will Robert Pattinson play Edward again?”
The obvious problem is that 12 years have passed since and no one is getting any younger. But then I think of Captain Marvel and how they made Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) look 25 years younger. So, at least from a technical perspective, I say it’s doable!
Considering that the Twilight movies were Summit Entertainment’s biggest box office hit, raking in over $3.3 billion worldwide, and the supporting fans who earned their Twihard name, I don’t think Hollywood will be able to resist.
The only problem I see is convincing the actors to fall back into the roles that launched their careers, especially Robert Pattinson who admitted publicly to hating the role. So, good luck with that!
By now, at least 5 people have told me that they got Twilight vibes when reading Forget Me Not. Although it wasn’t inspired by Twilight in no way, shape, or form, I’d be happy if Twilight fans would give Forget Me Not a try.
Check it out on Goodreads!
A reviewer on Amazon even assumed I wrote Twilight fanfiction “firmly in the Team Jacob camp”. I didn’t!
But I did write fanfiction for Lost Girl and Blood Ties. Both are Canadian Tv-Shows. By the way, Blood Ties was made after the Blood Books by Tanya Huff, which I recommend if you haven’t already read them.
